KWN 2005

In 2005 New Zealand schools took part in the Kid Witness News Competition for the first time. Fourteen schools from around Auckland were chosen to complete in the first Panasonic New Zealand Kid Witness News Competition. In the end, five of those schools were awarded with prizes with Avondale Intermediate School being the main benefactor, walking away with two technical awards, the award for best Primary/Intermediate School Video and the Overall Best Video Award. As a result, the school was awarded Panasonic product, and two students and one teacher were able to attend the Asia/Pacific awards in Thailand. Here they won the title of best script. Avondale's video entitled "Such a Waste" illustrated how litter and waste can get into our creeks and parks, and the effect that this can have on the natural environment.??The winning Secondary School video was Environment and Cell Phones by Alfriston College. Their video demonstrated the need to properly dispose of used cell phones. The other technical awards were won by Baverstock Oaks School and Botany Downs Secondary School. Both these schools have only been opened recently and both their videos reported about building a new culture in a new school.??The first year of Kid Witness News proved to be a great success and all the feedback from all the schools and students who participated has been extremely positive and all the signs are that 2006's competition will be even bigger and better.
